37 Day Count Down to War - Day 19

Day 19 - July 16th 1914

Both the Italian and Russian ambassadors in Vienna warn the Russian government in St. Petersburg: Austria is considering decisive action against the Serbs.

Word of the planned Austrian action against Serbia has hit the diplomatic circuit. The British are now aware that something is up in Austria.

However this was one of those days when developments in the unfolding crisis in continental Europe were not perceptible in London, or at least in the offices of The Daily Telegraph. Unwittingly, though, the Royal Navy was showing its preparedness for a war that was less than three weeks away. At Spithead, the fleet is arriving before the inspection by George V and the paper's correspondent is struck by the sight – 'an imposing naval pageant that an Englishman would go far to witness'

In London, a smaller scale inspection is being carried out. Queen Alexandra is visiting Ernest Shackleton's ship Endurance before his impending voyage to the Antarctic

And some well dressed, middle-aged looking chaps are about to sail for America. Hard to believe that this is the British tennis team, off to compete in the David Cup
