37 Day Count Down to War - Day 15

July 12th 1914

Information was slow in being reported from Europe and as a result the was not a lot of news from Austria and Sarajevo on this day 100 years ago. However July 12 was of course an enormously significant day in Ulster and there was much to say about how the Unionist leader Sir Edward Carson – who presented colours to the Antrim Regiment at Larne – marked it

Another familiar domestic figure makes the news again. Mrs Pankhurst is released from Holloway, under the Cat and Mouse Act, after continuing to starve herself following her eighth arrest. As war neared, this game did not have much longer to run

At Southend, thousands of day-trippers gather to see the visit of the 3rd Battle Squadron of the Royal Navy
